A novel source of insulin producing beta cells would make possible many more islet transplants for the treatment of diabetes. Various possible sources have been explored. I shall outline our work on respecification of tissues from the liver (hepatocytes and biliary epithelium). These tissues are developmentally very close to the pancreas and it is hoped that changing the expression state of a few transcription factors can provoke reprogramming.
